Consumer Choice guides you through the latest satellite navigation systems

Most consumers probably don’t realise it, but the ubiquitous sat nav, or satellite navigation system, that so many of us now use was originally developed for military applications. Sat nav technology is used in particular to increase the accuracy and precision of many modern day weapons as well as allowing military forces to be located and directed more easily.

Thankfully, most sat nav users are only interested in more prosaic applications such as easily finding a destination while avoiding getting lost. However, sat nav technology is still evolving with today’s systems able to do far more than simple route planning. Sat navs can now give traffic alerts, direct to points of interest as well being developed for use with smartphones and tablet computers.
