Camcorders today are facing stiff competition from smartphones and tablets, which offer ever-higher resolution and have the advantage of being multi-tasking devices that users are likely to have with them at all times to capture unexpected golden moments. The camcorder and digital camera markets have declined as consumers opt for a mobile-connected device that serves a number of purposes, enabling the consumer to consolidate several products into one. However, one subsegment of the camcorder market that has bucked this trend – and is, in fact, enjoying growth – is the action camcorder category. Also called sports or point-of-view camcorders, these rugged devices are specially designed for capturing high-speed action in adventure sports and outdoor activities, such as biking, motocross, snowboarding, skydiving and surfing.
